VERBIO Ethanol Zörbig GmbH & Co. KG
When VERBIO Ethanol Zörbig went into operation in September 2004 in Zörbig (Saxony-Anhalt), it was the first plant in Germany to produce bioethanol for use in fuel. It was developed with the company's own expertise and continues to set the standard in cost-effective fuel production making efficient use of raw materials. Every year, more than 270,000 tonnes of poor-quality grain unsuitable for the food industry is processed there using a new method. The main raw materials used are rye, triticale and wheat. The modern, energy-efficient plant produces ethanol with a purity exceeding 99.8%.
In 2010, the world's first bio-refinery was built at Zörbig. The process developed by VERBIO using the whole crop in a closed loop enables us to create bioethanol from the raw materials, after which biogas is generated from the residue. The by-products are high quality organic fertilizers such as nitrogen and potassium, which are recycled back to agriculture. By 2013, the currently 30 MW refinery will be expanded to 50 MW.
Annual production capacity:
- 100,000 tonnes of bioethanol
- 250 gigawatt-hours of biogas
- By-product: organic fertilizers
