In 2004, Verbio began bioethanol production at its site in Zörbig (Saxony-Anhalt). The technology was developed in-house and sets the benchmark for CO₂- and energy-efficient biofuel production. The innovative multi-feedstock facility produces ethanol with a purity of over 99.8 percent from grain and corn.
In 2010, the first Verbio biorefinery with integrated bioethanol and biomethane production was commissioned at the site. The proprietary process developed by Verbio enables the use of the entire plant. Agricultural raw materials are first converted into bioethanol, and the fermentation residue from this process – known as stillage – is then used to produce biomethane. In addition, high-quality animal feed and fertilizers are generated and returned to agriculture in a closed-loop system.
Zörbig is also home to the headquarters of VERBIO Agrar GmbH, which is responsible within the Verbio Group for the procurement of raw materials and the marketing of feed and fertilizer products resulting from the production process.
At the Zörbig site, we also operate a pilot plant for the production of high-quality grain-based proteins. These proteins are extracted from the protein-rich mash produced during ethanol manufacturing and are currently used in animal nutrition. In the future, they may also be used in the food industry. To this end, VERBIO Protein GmbH was established at the Zörbig site.
