VERBIO Ethanol Zörbig GmbH & Co. KG
When VERBIO Ethanol Zörbig went into operation in September 2004 in Zörbig (Saxony-Anhalt), it was the first plant in Germany to produce bioethanol for use in fuel. It was developed with the company's own expertise and continues to set the standard in cost-effective fuel production making efficient use of raw materials. Every year, more than 270,000 tonnes rye, triticale and wheat are converted into bioethanol. The modern, energy-efficient plant produces ethanol with a purity exceeding 99.8%.
In 2010, the world's first bio-refinery was built at Zörbig. The process developed by VERBIO using the whole crop in a closed loop enables us to create bioethanol from the raw materials, after which biomethane is generated from the residue. The by-products are high quality organic fertilizers such as nitrogen and potassium, which are recycled back to agriculture. The biomethane plant has a capacity of 30 MW.
Annual production capacity:
- 60,000 tonnes of bioethanol
- 240 gigawatt-hours of biomethane
- By-product: organic fertilizers and feed
