VERBIO AG: Biofuel Expertise for the German Aerospace Industry

Leipzig/Zörbig, 8 June 2011 – VERBIO AG, a leading independent producer and supplier of biofuels and founding partner of the “Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany – aireg e.V.” association to be inaugurated in Berlin today is set to use its technological and production-specific expertise in the development and production of biofuels. The purpose of the newly founded association is to promote science, research and environmental protection in Germany focussing on climate-neutral aviation fuels.

VERBIO will provide consultation services for the initiative in terms of sustainable biofuel production with maximum CO2 savings and solutions for suitable renewable energy sources as alternatives to kerosene.
Claus Sauter, CEO of VERBIO AG, explained: “Liquid biofuels are currently the only option for meeting the requirements of a renewable fuel for the aviation industry. VERBIO produces the most CO2-efficient and cost-effective biofuels for road transportation. We have the technological and product-specific skills to develop biofuels for flight operations which best meet the ecological and economic requirements of the industry with regard to achieving the ambitious emission targets set by the aviation industry.”

The aviation industry has committed itself to achieving CO2-neutral growth by 2020 and cutting its CO2-emissions by 50% in absolute terms by 2050 compared with 2005.

VERBIO AG has managed to achieve cascade utilisation of the biomass used with a technologically new bio-refinery concept consisting of a bioethanol plant, biogas plant and bio-fertiliser plant. The biofuels produced in this way achieve a greenhouse gas reduction of up to 90% compared with petrol. With repeated utilisation, the raw materials deployed can be almost completely converted into renewable energy using technically sophisticated processes. The remaining mineral components are almost entirely returned to the crop growth cycle. This plant network will make it possible to more than double the energy output per hectare of land compared with the existing biofuel production process. This will lead to maximum sustainability in the material life cycle.

VERBIO AG received the biogas innovation prize for this world first from the German Energy Agency (dena) in December 2010.
